Having grown up in the 60’s and 70’s I am of the pre remote control age. With only three channels to choose from and if the channel needed changing, someone (normally the youngest) was dispatched to change the channel.
Our first remote controlled video recorder was attached by a wire (there was only one seat in the living room that the wire reached to, and there was always a battle for that seat!) and you were able to do exciting things like, fast forward, rewind and pause!!! The world had changed.
Fast forward (excuse the pun) to today and it seems that everything can be remotely operated. Video recorders have been and gone (does anyone still use one?) But in our house, we have remote control TV, DVD, and if you include your phone as a remote, lights, heating, and if you include voice, throw in an alexa too!!
Everything controlled by the touch of your fingertips and your voice. Never been easier to take control.
If only it was that easy with our lives?
I wonder what it would be like if we had a remote control? Where we could pause, rewind, or fast-forward?
What would we avoid (fast forward)? When would we want to rewind (go back and relive)? When would we pause (stay in the moment)? I bet we can all think of times in our lives that we could do that with.
But we can only live today. Jesus tells us in Matthew’s Gospel not to worry about tomorrow and that tomorrow will worry about itself, and that each day has enough trouble of its own.
Whilst we live in a remote-control age, we can’t remotely order our lives, we can only take that one day at a time. Sometimes in life we can have worries over the future and what that will bring, for ourselves, our church, our community and the world.
But, if we try and focus on today and trust God with the future, that will help in overcoming our fears and anxieties.
